Bill Spoon’s BBQ Named One of Countrys Best

LocalEats has named Bill Spoon's Barbeque on South Blvd. one of the 20 Best Barbecue Restaurants in America.  Bill Spoon's has been serving great BBQ since 1963.  Their secret is they cook the whole pig, most BBQ restaurants just use the pig butts.  This gives Bill Spoon's a very diverse taste to their BBQ since you get the flavors from the whole pig.  They serve you on a paper plate which adds to the down home experience.  No alcohol is served here and they are closed on Sundays.

Unfortunately, Spoon’s isn’t even one of the top 20 bbq restaurants in NC, much less the country. The author of “localeats” obviously doesn’t know much about bbq. Spoon’s quit cooking with wood years ago, which means it isn’t bbq, its just roast pork. Dry, tasteless roast pork at that.

Oh, and Roxanne, while its true that in this part of the state most bbq is shoulders only, its the opposite down east. All eastern style is whole pig, so to say that “most restaurants just use the shoulders” is wrong. Also, I dare you to do a blind taste test and tell the difference between shoulders only and whole hog.

and YOU obviously don’t know what you’re talking about! Have you ever eaten Spoon’s barbecue? Get your facts straight before spitting out unfactual statements.

another who doesn’t know what they’re talking about…two completely different kinds of BBQ buddy! Spoon’s has been around since 1963- for a reason.

I like the new Queen City Q in Uptown Charlotte. The guys that started Mac’s own it and it is always consistent.

I LOVE Bill Spoon’s BBQ!! The Q is phenomenal! I am also in love with the banana pudding and hush puppies! The service is fast and friendly. They make you feel like a member of the family, even if it is your fist time there. There is no mistaking why this place has been here since 1963! Check it out for yourself!!!

Great article! Spoon’s is fabulous- from the moist pulled pork to the amazing hushpuppies. For a REAL down-home meal with homemade sides, everyone should try this place. My favorite is the homemade brunswick stew, and their new fried pickles are the best around! A reviewer mentioned that they didnt cook with wood- they do smoke with wood, but remember that is is illegal to have an open pit in Mecklenburg County…so your comment isn’t exactly relevant. They cook whole hog for 12 hours- that is what makes the difference in their pork. Their service makes you feel like family, and the food leaves you full and happy every time. My family’s favorite restaurant! They won this award for a reason…try them out! They also have extended dinner hours for family dinners.

Bill Spoon’s BBQ- a small, quaint restaurant on South Blvd. that I visit at least once a week during lunch breaks. Everything, and I mean everything on the menu, is absolutely delicious. In 30 years of eating here, I’ve never been disappointed. The pork is pulled, and so good by itself that its without sauce. Their signature homemade vinegar bbq sauce rests on each table- in case you need an extra “kick.” That is true Eastern NC Style! Who wants to smother their pork in sweet BBQ sauce? That’s for covering up nasty, gritty meat…something you will never encounter as Spoons. They have an extended menu with new items- and their homemade sides are the best around. I particularly like the BBQ potatos and the onion rings. The coleslaw is mustard based, Eastern NC tradition. You could go to other BBQ places in Charlotte, but you’d be disappointed. Skip the junk and go for Spoon’s- unlimited hushpuppies, attentive waitresses who never let your glass of their homemade sweet tea get below 3/4 full, and finish it off with some homemade banana pudding just like your grandma used to make. Now I’m hungry- headed there now!
