Let’s Taco Bout Cinco de Mayo

Let’s Taco Bout Cinco de Mayo

Tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo. This annually observed holiday celebrates the defeat of the French army during the Battle of Puebla in Mexico on May 5, 1862 and should not be confused with Mexico’s Independence Day.

Americans love a good party and began celebrating the holiday in states such as California and Arizona in the late 1860’s. It has been nationally celebrated ever since.

Traditional and authentic Mexican cuisine such as flautas, tamales, chile rellenos, camote (a sweet potato dish) and chiles en nogada (chiles in a walnut sauce), play a huge part of the Cinco de Mayo tradition.

American’s love their salsa and queso and simply can’t eat enough of it, especially on Cinco de Mayo. More chips please.

Did you know that…..

– according to the California Avocado Commission, Americans consume up to 81 million avocados on Cinco de Mayo.

– there are more than 360 U.S. tortilla manufacturing establishments.

– enchiladas, a corn tortilla rolled and filled with ingredients like meat and cheese, are among the most consumed foods during Cinco de Mayo celebrations.

– queso blanco is not a Mexican cheese as commonly believed but can often be found in dishes throughout Central and South America.

– according to the Daily Meal, the US consumes twice as much Tequila as Mexico, where the spirit originated. And, although the margarita is known as the traditional Cinco de Mayo libation, it was actually invented many years after annual celebrations began.
