My favorite place to grab a bagel on Sunday morning is Owen's Bagel and Deli on South Boulevard in the Pavillion building.
You could drive right past this place and not even see it, but on weekend mornings you will wait in line for a fresh steamed bagel. The steam is the secret here. The bagels are put into a steam tray and come out chewy and delicious. I am not a fan of waiting in line, but there is plenty of graffiti covering the walls to entertain you until it is your turn to order. (Check out the Rudyard Kipling poem)
With over 30 choices hanging from the ceiling above you with off beat names such as the "Mark Cuban Look-A-Like," "Hangover Helper," or the "Tonya Harding Club" there is surely something that will please your taste buds. If not, then feel free to make your own wild creation.
My personal favorite is "Ben's Best" on an everything bagel with an egg added. I got a little too excited when I got the bagel that I took a bite out before I could even snap a pic.
One unique aspect of Owen's is the diversity of people. It is a Charlotte breakfast melting pot. There are toys for the kids to play with in the corner, markers laying around for you and your friends to write whatever is on your mind on the walls, and usually grandparents enjoying a bagel or two.
If you have not had a chance to try out this great restaurant, then do yourself a favor and give it a shot. You will be hooked.
Is this on South Blvd?
Yes, right across from Icehouse
About time Charlie started contributing to Restaurant Traffic. He sure ate many meals on the company dime.
Stopped in today for the first time and had a big, fat pumpernickel bagel. Really good. Best wishes to the new owners! I’ll be back. And you have free wifi too?
