I am surprised to say that I have never been to Kalu Uptown. When my friend and networking extrodinare Antoine Dennard invited me to meet some of his friends down from DC, I was looking forward to seeing a beautiful restaurant.
The event was more of a meet and greet than a dinner. So this post is going to be more about asthetics than food. That said, the buffet style presentation was quite good.
I sampled the chicken lollipops, skewers, delicate rice, spring rolls, and various other twists of traditional Asian dishes. They were all well prepared mass produced party fare to be sure, but this night was more about shaking hands and meeting people than any serious culinary pursuits. Despite Antoine's strict instructions for a laid back social atmosphere, business cards were exchanged and contacts were met.
If the food on the menu can compare to the level of finish work throughout the restaurant, Kalu should be on your radar. I can see this space hosting everything from receptions to photography sessions.
Tried Kalu when it first opened and was impressed with the food, not at all with the service. Hopefully they have gotten things under control service-wise and I would give it another shot. Kobe beef meatballs with foie gras were delicious.
